The Marauder Junior Varsity recorded a signature win on Friday, rallying twice against a skilled Manchester Central side to take a 3-2 decision in their home opener on Sawyer Hanlon's golden goal. Central took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when one of their skillful strikers filtered through the Hanover back line and barely beat Harris LaRock with a shot that just eluded his fingertips. The Marauders responded four minutes later when Kyle Doucette, enjoying a stint at midfield, collected a rebound from a Christo Dragnev corner kick and scored his first goal of the season.
Central, with a deep and talented squad (kind of what you expect from a school with an enrollment of 2,500) pulled ahead again with two minutes left in the half when a Little Green striker pounced on the rebound of a great save from LaRock, and put his team up 2-1 at the interval.
The Marauders started the second half on the front foot, and their territorial edge paid off nine minutes in, when the tied the match at 2-2 on a great goal from Colm Seigne, who collected a long throw from Lincoln Adam and his a beautiful chip for his second goal of the season. The Mauarders continued to press, particularly through Sawyer Hanlon, who was a presence in the Central end all match. Regulation ended in a 2-2 draw, but wily Hanover gaffer Yosef Osheyack sweet-talked the officials into allowing a golden goal overtime, and his team rewarded his trust. Hanlon put a header on goal after a corner kick by Aidan Rowley, and after a save by the Central keeper the ball made its way back to him, and he collected his overtime game winner.
An even bigger challenge awaits for the Marauders, who welcome Bedford to the HHS grass pitch on Tuesday at 5:30. Note the starting time, which will allow maximum field use and also allow the team to watch the second half of the Varsity contest on the turf, which kicks off at 6:30.
